" Osteopaths working
together in partnership .... "
This Osteopathic practice,
based in Cambridge UK since 1971, provides services to the community
population of over 120,000. We have close links with the British
School of Osteopathy in London, Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge
(ARU) and other education and training establishments and clinics,
providing learning opportunities to undergraduates and graduates.
The BSc in Osteopathy enables qualifying osteopaths to apply for registration
with the General Osteopathic Council, a body established following
the enactment of the Osteopaths Act 1993. Map

THE
PRACTICE - YOUR
QUESTIONS ANSWERED
WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT
?
Osteopaths
treat the mechanical and bio mechanical component of disease. Although
backache, which affects 4 out of 5 people at some time in their lives,
is the most common complaint treated by Registered Osteopaths, many
other conditions affect the body frame. Headaches and neck and shoulder
tension can be treated and any ligamentous-bone or joint strain such
as in the hips, knees, ankles, feet, elbows, shoulders and ribs may
also respond.
Other conditions which sometimes
fall within the scope of osteopathic treatment are certain osteo-arthritic
(degenerative) joint conditions, various spinal intervertebral disc
conditions such as 'slipped' or herniated intervertebral discs
and other associated joint capsular and ligamentous problems in sports
injuries, including cartilage injuries, tennis elbow and frozen shoulder.
During
pregnancy, when the change in posture can give rise to pain and discomfort,
many mothers-to-be find great relief from osteopathic treatment.
It is a good idea to check over babies and mothers after the delivery
following your normal post-natal medical check. There is the added
advantage of healthcare, avoiding drugs.
YOUR
DOCTOR (GP) AND OTHER MEDICAL ADVISERS
Although many of our patients
are referred by their doctor, it is not necessary. On some occasions
it is appropriate and helpful for us to write to your doctor or referring
specialist after the initial consultation to request further medical
history details and test results. We shall always seek
your permission to do so.
APPOINTMENTS & INFORMATION
It
is helpful for the osteopath to be informed of any medication that
you are currently taking for pain relief or other reasons, or other
medication which may have been recently prescribed by your doctor
or other medical adviser.
REGISTRATION & NEW PATIENTS
When patients register at the Practice they are asked to book
an appointment to see one of the osteopaths. You are required
to register with one of the osteopaths, but you are welcome to book
appointments with any of the osteopaths if your usual osteopath is
unavailable.
Your
first visit to us ...
WHAT
HAPPENS ON YOUR FIRST VISIT TO AN OSTEOPATH?
This is similar to that with
any Registered Medical Practitioner. The osteopath will want
to know how the symptoms began and physical and other factors which
affect them. After a complete medical history is taken, a thorough
examination is undertaken which may include orthopaedic, neurological
or circulatory examination, MRI scans, x-rays, blood tests or urinalysis
may be requested.
Following on from this, a
thorough investigation and assessment of the patient's posture and
structural state will lead to diagnosis. Treatment patterns
will be explained to you and some idea of the time scale for your
recovery, where appropriate. Examination and treatment is seldom painful.
You can bring a friend or relative with you and if you require one, a chaperone can be provided by the practice. Sometimes due to the busy nature of the practice, notice is needed to provide this service from amongst the staff present.
URGENT CASES
Urgent cases will be seen on the same day whenever possible.
Please phone as early as possible in the day. All osteopaths
have some emergency appointments available daily. If your osteopath
is booked or unavailable, you can be seen by one of the others. Emergency
appointments are available when possible when 'access and mobility'
are difficult, out of normal practice hours. Less urgent cases
are normally seen within 3-4 days.
SPORTS INJURIES
HOME VISITS
If you are not well enough to come to the Practice, please request
a home visit by talking to one of the receptionists before 10 am,
to be sure of a visit on the same day. After this time all visits,
for emergencies only, may have to wait until the next day.

TELEPHONE CALLS
If you wish to speak to your osteopath, please telephone between 12.30pm
& 1.30pm. Other calls can be accepted if the osteopath is
not busy with other matters within the practice.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES and CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT (CPD)
The practice is committed to teaching both undergraduates and young
osteopaths in training. This means that on occasions there may be
an osteopath or medical student sitting in with your osteopaths.
We ask for your help in continuing the education of our next generation
of osteopaths but you are of course able to withdraw from any teaching
scheme if you wish.
Meeting
facilities for CPD training seminars and workshops are available at Chesterton Road,
Cambridge.
YOUR ADDRESS & CHANGES
Please inform us of any change of address or phone number especially
in the case of 'Ex-Directory' listings. If you have
moved out of our immediate area, you may find it more convenient to
register with a more local Osteopath, a UK list can be supplied for
your new area through
the General Osteopathic Council.
CHARGES,
FEES FOR TREATMENT & THE NHS
The scale of fees will be explained to you when you make your first
enquiry. Many private health insurance companies, such as AXAPPP
and BUPA* cover treatment by an Osteopath, particularly when patients
have been referred by their GP or Medical Consultant. * [BUPA Provider No: 30000056 AXAPPP: ZZ00642]
CAN I SEE AN OSTEOPATH ON THE NHS?
Osteopathic treatment may
sometimes be available under the National Health Service (NHS), but
unfortunately not widely in the Cambridge area. (See PCTs)

Health centre of practice. More Information
